A smart card reader is a device that is used to read a smart card. A smart card is a plastic badge that incorporates an installed coordinated circuit that can be either a safe micro-controller or a memory chip. These cards have the capacity to store a lot of information, do encryption and validation as well.Smart Card Readers are commonly used for electronic processes such as personal identification, financial transactions (EMV credit card, debit or stored value), access control (physical access and logical access), authentication, loyalty, hospitality and gaming.

Smart Card Reader Types

Smart card readers are available in either contact, contactless, or a combination of contact and contactless models called dual-interface card readers.
Contact smart card readers require that the card is manually inserted into the reader by the user. This application is most commonly used for applications that require more security, like government IDs (National ID, drivers license, Personal Identity Verification (PIV), e-commerce transactions, campus IDs, secure network login, vending, meal plans, loyalty, electronic cash, and health care cards (insurance, electronic medical records / EMR) and border crossing cards.
Contactless smart card readers operate with a radio frequency such as NFC or RFID that communicates when the smart card comes close to the reader. The card does not physically have to be put onto or into the actual reader. Contactless card readers offer the added convenience and speed of not having to insert the card into a reader. The most common applications for contactless card readers include door and facility physical access control (PACS), ePassports, parking, vending, and tollbooth fares.

Supporting ISO/IEC 7816 SAM, 13.56 MHz contactless technology, and NFC, this PC-linked dual interface reader features end-user environments where virtually all types of credentials are used, even in mixed populations. Integrated 4 Sams, suitable for ATM and other areas of multiple security encryption. With its all-in-one concept, MCR0110P-4 enables a smooth transition from well-established traditional technologies into emerging NFC applications, pushing new business. It represents the perfect mix between modern, stylish design and the ergonomic use of any credential form factor, like ID-1 cards, tokens, or NFC-enabled smart phones. With its protected SAM socket, uTrust 4SAM Reader conveniently adds security to most contactless use applications. The end user experiences convenience, transaction_x005ftime efficiency, security, flexibility, and full NFC capability for use applications such as network logon, secure web based transactions, and even NFC based customer loyalty programs, Multiple SAM card slots are integrated for more secure applications.
